Multiple fuel types on the fly

Hey guys-
Want to kick start a discussion here.
Got a Gen VI 454 block I am planning a build for.
I think it would be cool to run either a procharger or turbos with a boost controller and multi fuel system.

Think in "cruise" mode you are running on pump swill, with low boost.
Kick a switch over, a secondary fuel system starts injecting 112 octane, and thus your boost can be kicked up.

Or, run a nitrous setup with the same approach. Cruise on pump gas, but when you hit the laughing gas the wet system mixes 112 for detonation resistance.

It would be pretty complex, but an awesome thing to build.
My main approach is to be able to run around on cheap fuel, and take it easy on parts until I really want to go fast..

Any thoughts, and/or experience?

I did a bit of research- yes indeed this has been done before!

https://books.google.com/books?id=8b...engine&f=false

E85 is referenced, which would be good for detonation resistance..

Re: Multiple fuel types on the fly

As a fun experiment ? Hell yea ! Running from a different fuel for different operating conditions is an Engineer's dream come true ....

But as a practical means of saving any money from the differing cost of running "pump swill" VS "the good stuff" , I'm not so sure . By the time you build in the two separate fuel sources with all of their associated switch over equipment VS just running good fuel , cost wise , it seems you'd have to drive it quite a while to recoup your investment . Add up the cost in both time & materials . Factor in that pump gas isn't free . And the difference in price between the fuels amount VS the entire cost of establishing the dual fuel system will mean that any real savings may prove elusive .

It may or may not save a dime , but I like the thinking behind it !

but they have a module controlling it. so its all automatic depending on how hard you hammer it

Just throwing it out there, but what if you did it with 1 tank, you'd just have to plan out when you wanted to go really fast. For example if you were going to the track Saturday, run your tank almost dry of cheap fuel & fill the tank with high octane & flip the switch.

Orangebird-

You're definitely right, however I am not really looking at this for "economy", LOL!

I really just want the flexibility to have awesome power, and then be able to tune things down without much labor. Laziness, and cool factor.

It would be cool bragging rights! I do plan on driving this car a lot- any sort of tours would be so expensive on 112! It is my first car, and it used to be my daily driver. Nowadays my old XJ can take all the knocks and dings.

Amilllion-
I've seen their stuff- its incredible! Any idea if they are injecting both types down the engine, or one octance rating at a time? My idea was to "piggyback" the higher octance.

Formula- I thought of that same issue, I would install a second tank/system, that would be smaller.

Re: Multiple fuel types on the fly

I have written code to check and automatically adjust for ethanol content. It will need a chunk of ram so it would require the NVSRAM addon.

I've also written a very simple algorithm to switch "modes" "on the fly" (engine off, could probably figure out a way while driving...). This can be written to adjust any table(s) really. So possibilities are endless. This WILL be implemented on a 730 ecu running axxd

This along with a couple electric cutouts set to bypass a turbo could be some crazy mode switching.

If I work in some output on the 730 one could easily set this code to alter wastegate duty cycle tables and limit boost. I did this in a WRX to have 4 different drive modes. Valet, economy, performance, and antilag. It worked extremely well. Was really handy having so many inputs to choose from. And direct control of the drive by wire throttle made valet mode incredible.

Vanilla-

That is some cool stuff you have going there. I had kicked around the idea of MS 2, how user friendly is the 730 ecu? This would be a BBC swap, no TPI/TBI/LT/LS.

It is an LG4 car- I've read pocket's write ups, and have the pins and tools to repin the c100/207.

Power adders aside- there is a part of me that wants to make a fantasy car- you know how some guys will take a monte carlo, and throw in a turbo'd 3800, as if GM had made a GN equal?

Well, Chevy made a prototype 454 C4 Corvette. It would too cool to make a "what-if"454 camaro.
