081 vs 882

ive done a ton of searching but i cant find any opinions on which heads are better in 100% bone stock form. i just bought a 350 that currently has the 882 heads on it with the stock intake manifold, would i be much better of with the 081 heads and the aluminium stock intake? if so would i have to run 93 octane?

the block has codes 010207 and v0307fsj on the engine id code. any input would be greatly appreciated i am putting engine in tomorrow

Re: 081 vs 882

Depends on what pistons are in the block. Gonna have to look at em to find out.

One thing is FOR SURE though; 882 heads are about THE WORST GARBAGE there is. ANY other heads (almost) would be better.

I pulled the oil pan and 3991476 is cast into the Pistons does that tell you what they are?

Re: 081 vs 882

Those are 5.7L V8 or 4.3L V6 pistons Hypereutectic, destroked .020". 3.14" dia. head recess .07" deep with 4 valve reliefs. Use 1986 & earlier rings. Not intended for race applications.

APPROXIMATE HEAD VOLUME=11.5cc

Comp. Ht. 1.540
Pin Dia..9273 Offset

Or can be 4 valve reliefs (13cc), 3.16" dia. head recess .08" deep. Use 1986 and earlier rings. Same as 1470 except packaged in sets of 6.

APPROXIMATE HEAD VOLUME=13cc

Comp. Ht. 1.540
Pin Dia..9273 Offset

So either 11.5cc or 13cc reliefs but destroked 0.020" w/1.540" compressed height.

Hope this helps.

Re: 081 vs 882

Yerbasic smogger crap; frequently found in engines with those horrible old smogger heads. We call em "12cc dish".

Good for around 8.2:1 compression with 882 heads, using the most optimistic assumptions.

Pretty much, anti-performance. Relics of the low power, deeeeeeeep smogger era we'd all like to forget.
