Installing Vaccum Pump

I'm re plumping my Vaccum pump on my 91 z28. Some of the hoses are showing wear. But not sure if I should change my setup or not. It's currently plumped from the pump to a resivor tank to the brake booster. Thinking of running the intake Vaccum port to the pump then directly to the brake booster eliminating the resivor and with the added help from the engine running the pump less. Any thoughts or ideas?

Re: Installing Vaccum Pump

Your car has a vaccum pump? The only vehicles I've seen with vaccum pumps are some diesels with vaccum assist brakes because they don't make enough manifold vaccum and early 80's Vegas with an electric pump to supply enough vaccum for the power brakes.

Lots of today's cars do this. Take a look at the HHR or the gen5 V6 Camaro. They run a hose from both the intake manifold and the vacuum assist pump to the brake booster with an additional one-way valve on the pump side to prevent an engine vacuum leak. It then uses a pressure sensor at the booster to determine when vacuum assist is needed. There are both OE and aftermarket parts to make this happen. I have not measured vacuum to my booster yet, but if it is too low, I'll be adding this setup to my car.

Re: Installing Vaccum Pump

Why does your car have a vacuum pump on it for the brakes? Is this something you or a PO added to the system? The only vacuum pumps I'm familiar with on '91 camaros are the air injection for the emissions system.

Re: Installing Vaccum Pump

Had to install an aftermarket pump because my cam doesn't allow the engine to create enough Vaccum for the brakes at times

I'm curious how low your vacuum was before you decided to install the vacuum pump. I measured 11" of vacuum at idle, but haven't driven the car yet to see how that feels in the brake pedal. I still have to license and insure it, and get exhaust installed before I can drive.
