Alternator missmatch
Wondering if I could get some assistance. My car is in a shop for the alternator. I physically cannot replace it because I got injured on a fire call just this week and can't do much. The place has had several alternators and said they don't fit. He asked if I had the original engine in there I said yes. Apparently none of the alternators for a 86 trans am fit my car. And 85 trans am alt. Fits but is missing one mounting spot. Can anyone help? Maybe provide a part number for the alternator so we can start matching things up? I need it for tomorrow for an MRI but the charging system went kapoot. Also if anyone has experience with these misfitting let me know

Re: Alternator missmatch
There's a pic above; setup is same to all the 350 TPIs I've seen in person as of late? Not sure if you're referring to something else or the bracket the alt is attached to in the pic? If it's missing a piece I wouldn't mind knowing, though.

Re: Alternator missmatch
mine looks totally different than that, that is a bird right? I know camaros have a diff setup in some instances.
The alternator on mine is on the passenger side and Ac on the other side, with a bracket over top. It doesn't look like the previous owner did the higher amp alternator mod (east to tell when driving at night too). I think I have it figured out, I will post back if it works

Re: Alternator missmatch
85 and 86 and 87 LB9 alternators all will fit but he may have to loosen the bracket first. And 87 would require wiring adapter. "Shop" should be able to match old to new, if nothing else.

Re: Alternator missmatch
BTW, the. lower bolt tube doesn't have to bolt to the back of the alt. except to help assembly line wotkers. The strap on it varies in length but it's non-critical once the alt. is bolted up.

On the back of the alt. there should be a brace that goes down to the stud on the exhaust manifold. It is round and flat on each end where it bolts.

His car has a V-belt system,..... 85-87 alternator has a ribbed belt - but it's still considered a V-belt set-up.

Re: Alternator missmatch
That picture is perfect!! Thank you so much. From that I found the correct alternator. I took the car back from the mechanic and ordered the Alternator. My girlfriend won't be happy with me but at least someone will know what they're doing.
