When you say "everything" , that includes all 16 lifters , the distributor , and the camshaft retaining piece that's under the camshaft's drive sprocket that bolts to the block with a couple or three bolts , yes ?

If so , there should be nothing else holding you back from sliding it out , provided it's not rusted stuck to it's bearings and can't turn ? Or sludged in to the point of being almost glued in place ? If it turns free and all the above is removed I can't see why it shouldn't slide out .

Have you tried bolting the sprocket back on and using that to get good enough of a grip to give a good tug on it ?

If everything is out, does it spin freely?

I had a machine shop assemble a long block for my brother because I was too busy and they never verified cam bearing clearances... that cam would not spin or slide.

A very good question indeed , since untill the distributor comes out the intake manifold can't come off , and I see no other way to remove the lifters till the manifold is out of the way ?
