Wire/fusible link
Is this what happens to the smaller wire when a fusible link gets hit? Is the yellow piece a fusible link (it was inline from the alternator near the bat)? BTW, I broke it open to see the guts.
EDIT: Just noted that the newly ordered bat cable has an auxilliary Lead: 14 ga x 8" fusible link w/ Butt Splice. Looks much the same.

Re: Wire/fusible link
The wire itself is the fusable link.
I aSSume your butt connector melted because it was not properly crimped.

Transmission: Sometimes

Re: Wire/fusible link
The yellow thing was just yerbasic crimp type butt splice. (sounds painful doesn't it...)
Butt yes, when a fusible link operates, the actual conductor inside it, melts and/or vaporizes. Ideally they're made with some insulation material such as XLPE or Hypalon or the like that doesn't melt like that gray wire did. Somehow that just doesn't look like the way a fusible link should have handled that occurrence.

Re: Wire/fusible link
Hoping there's no damage elsewhere caused by the short—and my stoopidity. No accessories were attached to the bat, only the line from the alt to battery was in place. Bat tests ok.

Re: Wire/fusible link
Finally got a replacement bat cable with 14 gauge fusible link. Any issues with using shrink tubing over the butt connector?

Re: Wire/fusible link
All together. After a bit of an idle and a test drive, everything seems good to go.
Below pic of the fusible link with burned out wire as well as the crimper I use. Thanks for the help all.
