Engine removal question

Can the TPI engine in these cars be pulled as a complete unit? I mean with headers and the whole top end along with accessories intact? I want to change my intake, cam and heads and would prefer doing it on a stand. I don't feel like yarding all the crap off whilst bent over an engine bay. However if I have to strip the intake and pull the headers, leaving just a block sitting in the mounts then I might as well do the whole damn thing while it's in the bay.

Re: Engine removal question

Long tubes wont come out with the engine, shorties should. I usually just pull the plenum, runners and distributor and yank the rest out with the engine.

Re: Engine removal question

I have the Edelbrock TES headers. I pulled it years ago but I really stripped it down. This time I'd prefer just to haul it out in one piece. Plenum, runners and distributor are simple so I don't mind that. I have the option of putting the car on a hoist this time so access will be easier and I'd have to have it out relatively quick then.

Re: Engine removal question

I pulled my old tpi and tranny out altogether. Can't answer on the headers part since
I had the stock manifolds on still. Came out pretty easily though.

Re: Engine removal question

If you gotta' pull all that stuff off anyway - just pull off what has to come off ( distrib, wiper motor at a min ) & then pull the motor. I'd REALLY rather install a cam/heads and re-set rockers with the engine on a stand or on the ground compared to leaning over the car. If the car is a cruise night or show car,..... a lot less risky too cause our not always rubbing on the finish or carrying parts back-forth over the fenders/nose.

When pulling a TPI V8 I always remove the runners/plenum/TB, ect to avoid damaging them. Headers usually get removed, but manifolds usually stay on. I also pull the accessories if the tranny is coming out with the engine to reduce the weight and help reduce stress on the cherry-picker. Removing the accessories first also gives you a lot more room to get the front of the engine to clear the radiator support when lifting it. ( much less space to work if the crank pulley is still installed ! )

Good luck - no matter how you do it !!

Re: Engine removal question

When I yarded the TPI 305 out of my 86 IROC, I did it with the intake in place as well as the exhaust manifolds. I don't recall whether I pulled the distributor but it's likely (this was back in 04). Also the alternator, power steering pump and AC compressor were removed for clearance at the rad support. I wasn't too concerned about any damage to the intake although it did survive (and went on to live in an early 80s Caprice). Transmission came out with it too.

In all the engine replacements I've done in my Camaro I've never had to pull the wiper motor, why do you pull them?

Re: Engine removal question

Maybe it's just a carry-over for me,......

Berlinetta Wiper Covers are pretty much non-existent so busting it means no wipers till I can source another wiper motor. Another is that I pull engines solo and want as much clearance as possible -----> everywhere. I prefer to pull engine and tranny together and always guess on the angle when hooking the chain to the puller. ( I don't care for the "levelers" ) Better for the wiper motor to be removed from the equation just in case I've got to man-handle the drive-train over a motor mount or something like that.

I guess I'm not familiar with the Berlinetta wiper covers, can you post a picture? I just learned something.

Re: Engine removal question

Sure; Part of the cap is busted around the socket,... but you get the idea.

Re: Engine removal question

If you have access to a lift the easiest and best way to the lift the car off the K member. That's how I do mine. Also that lets you pull the engine fully dressed even long tubes can stay on the motor

The freshened up L98 going back in 100% complete except for the throttle body

4th Gen's have to come out the bottom. 3rd can go either way but out bottom is fastest...

The motor and trans as removed. I did pull the Alt and the dist.
