I can take keys in and out of the ignition but the ignition won't move. It looks like it's stuck on the lock position but i can take keys in and out and move the shifter out of park. The steering wheel moves but makes a funny sound like it's trying to lock. Right before it locked, i could take the key out while the car was running. Now the ignition won't move at all. Thanks for the help.

 

If you could remove the key from the lock cylinder before it was at the OFF poosition, and now the cylinder won't turn with the key, it's very likely that you lock cylinder is worn to the pooint of the bronze plates falling out onto the floor.

Sounds like you'll be shopping for a replacement ignition lock cylinder very soon. If you don't have a steering wheel puller, you should budget for that, too. The cylinders are about $15-20 at most auto parts "supermarkets" and the pullers can be had for less than $25.00.

As long as you car is an '84, you don't need to be concerned about an air bag, so the installation is fairly straightforward. Plan on about two hours if you've neverr done it before and are careful.
