86 camaro 2.8 5spd

Any help is appreciated. i am having an issue when the car gets warm. It seems like it is starving for fuel and my fuel gauge is always above the full marker. i was wondering what can cause this. i heard it could be the fuel pump relay but im not sure.

Jimmy1188 Welcome to Third Gen . Org !

I can tell you for certain that your gauge pegged above full means that there is on open circuit somewhere in your fuel gauge equipment . It could be in the gauge itself (not highly likely , but possible) , it could be the wiring between the gauge and the sending unit (more likely than the gauge but less likely than the sender) , or the most likely suspect usually being the sending unit itself . Now , the way it works is when the resistance is high ("less of a connection") the gauge needle is high . When the resistance is low ("more of a connection") the gauge needle is low . A way to troubleshoot this would be to put a 10 or 20 ohm resistor between the wire for the sending unit and ground , at the nearest possible electrical connection you can get to closest to the tank , and if that causes the needle to drop down to like 1/4 or so of a tank when you turn the key on then it all but proves your sender is bad (could be a bad ground to the tank itself too , but I'd think that would kill the pump along with the gauge , and your pump does run since you say the engine does run) .

Now as to your crappy running when warm , no , the fuel pump relay is really not a suspect here , since the fuel pump gets it's power when the engine is running from the oil pressure switch . The most likely causes here will be found either in the regular tune up items , plugs , filters , & that sort of thing , or a malfunctioning engine system such as the EGR for example . Since the tuneup is likely needed anyway , that wouldn't be a bad start , and then you'll have an established baseline to begin troubleshooting from if the tune up doesn't cure the bad warm engine running .
