cant retard timing

Hi everyone, i have a 350 sbc im trying to adjust the timing because at the momment the car is intial timing is 40 btdc , car runs no problems but i think this is the reason why its running to rich, so im trying to retard the timing but the wires for the tach are to short so it wont let me go back enough, what can i do? once i start retarding the timing the car starts to sound so much better, but im thinking that maybe the previous owner put #1 spark in wrong place? i found tdc and tried to move spark plug wires back one spot to give me the clearence to adjust the timing but i think i just flooded the engine trying to find tdc lol, so now im waiting, any of you have a suggestion on what i should do thanks

Re: cant retard timing

So, you rotate the dist body one direction, and it runs better. Which way is that? (viewed from above) Clockwise or counter?

Re: cant retard timing

clockwise, well i got the car started, and it seems if i go lower then 30 btdc the car dies, and the sweet spot at least according the my ears and the sound of the car is 45 btdc so that seems abnormal right? but when i checked for tdc the timing tab and strip on the balancer match up at 0 so im kinda confused at this point? shouldnt i be getting around 12 btdc for a typical sbc?

Re: cant retard timing

Turn the engine off.

Rotate it by hand or by having your assistant BUMP the starter until it's about 20° before #1 firing; make sure it's #1 FIRING, and not the other time #1 comes to TDC, which is, the time that the exh valve is closing and the int is opening. Easiest way to do this is to pull the #1 plug and wait for compression: once #1 compression begins, the next time #1 TDC comes up, it's #1 firing. Remember, #1 and #6 come to TDC at the same time; when # 6 is firing, that instance of #1 TDC is NOT firing. You DO NOT what to do what comes next at #6 firing.

When it's at that point, pop the dist cap off. Rotate the dist body until you see the "starwheel" teeth line up. See where the rotor is pointing. THAT'S where the #1 plug wire should now be, for however you have the dist stabbed in. Put the #1 plug wire there and then the others in firing order clockwise from there 18436572. See how it runs.

Re: cant retard timing

I common thing that happens is when somebody replaces the original 305 engine and drops in a random 350 from somewhere and then puts the original 305 balancer on it.

Where is your timing tab located? Welded to the front face of the timing chain cover (viewed straight down behind the water pump) or over in the "1:30" position (seen under the driver's side leg of the water pump)?

There are two different locations for the TDC line on modern SBC balancers. A 13* offset line balancer (used with the "1:30" position timing tab) and 45* (used with the one welded to the face of the timing chain cover). You can't do mixie-matchie with them or you'll be off by more than 30* when you go shoot it with the timing gun.

I've seen this so many times I've lost count. That your motor tries to die below 30* (indiciated by the timing light) is a STRONG indication this is your problem.
