Draining gas tank using fuel pump.

So here's where i am. Need a new pump for my 383. Old pump still works. Can I unhook the fuel line under the hood, run a piece of hose to a bucket, and just kick on the ignition to prime the pump? ....without building pressure, will it keep running??? -which is what I want.

...or are there any other methods you can suggest? For the record, the parts store siphon tube didn't work.

It won't keep running just from the prime, it's based on time and not pressure. You can however jump the wires for the fuel pump by removing the fuel pump relay and jumping the correct terminals with a sufficient gauge piece of metal. If I remember correctly I disconnected the fuel line at the rear tank to run a line from, since I already had it up in the air. But the idea is sound and would work disconnecting it at the engine too.

I actually just unclamped my return line under the car and bam, entire tank drained through that using gravity.

If not, powering the pump will get most all of it out, aside from a gallon or 2. Totally safe way to do that. Just give it 12v power.

yes you can-I drained my tank using the pump:just jumpered power over to the fuel pump connection and pumped it out into a bucket.

I undid the connection at the fuel filter. Filter was located just in front of the left rear wheel house. (Former TPI chassis).

Re: Draining gas tank using fuel pump.

Yep, this is how i drain the tank when I need to pull it and it has a working pump. Jump the relay and it pumps away into a gas can so I can use it again later!

Re: Draining gas tank using fuel pump.

Every time I need to drain a tank, I just pop the fuel line off the filter, and jump the fuel pump relay with a paperclip.

Re: Draining gas tank using fuel pump.

I made a jumper for my triple pump setup for when i need to drain pump gas and throw in race gas. Single 255 pump flows well to drain a tank in a fairly quick amount of time
