sbc 327 problems
i have a 327 in a 82 camaro , transmission is a borg warner super t10 . the car idles and seems great in neautral , but when taking off and letting out the clutch the car want to bog down and die , the car had been starting hard when hot , ijust put comp cam roller rockers and i do not think i set valve lash wrong because its ran great even after that untill now . have had backfire through exhaust and carb , timing is set 10 degress btdc , 36 total . the clutch has been getting spongey and harder to use . is this all a clutch problem ? or should i look into other things first before tearing the trans or motor out .

Can you tell us more about the engine?
What induction?
Cam?
Manifold?
Modifications?
Compression?
Heads?
When did it start having issues? What happened right before that? Did it sit, get some work done?

Do you have a way to monitor the engines vacuum. It will tell you a lot about the valves being set correct or not and will let you see what it is doing when you are trying to get it down the road. I would look for a bouncing needle for a bad valve adjustment. With backfires thru the carb and exhaust it sounds like one or more are too tight. With the engine running, loosen each rocker until it ticks and tighten down until it just stops, then 1/4-1/2 turn more and you are good with hydraulic lifters. Solid lifters will be a different way to set and I don't see what kind of cam is in it.

Re: sbc 327 problems
i am not sure of the cam in it , definatley not stock . p.o. put it in ,stock heads , has wiend intake , 1 5/8 headman haders , holley 600 cfm , heads are stock ,not sure of compression . has hei accel super coil , previously before this the car would die when turning sharp corner , adjusted float levels , fixed that problem , carb has had trouble ever since i bought it, i tried doing the valve adjustment with the engine running as you described and the rocker would knock thee socket out of place and couldnt tighten it . and the car doesnt seem to want to rev past 2800 smoothly and starts to sputter and misfire .

Sounds like the classic Holley problem wherein the jets are too large, the primary power valve is too low a number, and the primary throttles are too far open at idle.
Rebuild the carb COMPLETELY (COMPLETE tear-down, soak in solvent, reassemble w all new paper & rubber) then visit the carb forum and follow the Holley Tuning sticky at the top.
