Question about setting timing on TPI engine

Hey guys I'm installing a 350 TPI into my Trans am from a 305 setup originally. I've gotten everything hooked up and am now ready for the timing procedure but one thing that has confused me is how are you supposed to do it accurately when the computer is in learn mode (not sure of the actual term name) when the battery is disconnected and the computer resets and relearns which causes it to start up and die almost right away until you start driving it. That's basically what is happening right now when I try to set the timing so I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine alive. Should I just set the distributor up to the normal position and just "drive" the car a bit while its on jackstands so the computer can calibrate and idle on its own and then setup the timing? Cheers

Re: Question about setting timing on TPI engine

You disconnect the EST wire when setting timing - that takes the computer out of the equation. 6 BTDC - Reconnect EST after.

You then disconnect and reconnect the battery to clear the code. There is no learning by the ECU until after, which is then based on the timing you set with the EST disconnected.

That's it. Then perform the idle reset procedures on the IAC and base idle speed

Thanks for clarifying that for me, much appreciated!
