dieseling, running hot, smells extemely rich.....

I should be getting my car back from the paint shop in a few days, but before i brought it in, for a few weeks, my car had been running really rich, running hot in the winter (gets to 220 while idling in a couple of minutes, but never gets over 230). Before i had my cat taken off my car didnt smell rich, but then ever since ive had it take off it really smells like gas. I only get about 11 miles to a gallon on my Lg4, which seems lame. My timing was advanced to 7 degrees, from the stock 0 degrees. My choke is set perfectly. My car idles at 900 in park, and 650 in drive. Even before this the car was having the problems, it just seems a little better nowadays, as far as idle is concerned. I heard if your timing is too far advanced it wont crank over very quickly, and my car cranks over and starts in the 35 degree cold of a morning in a second or two. Im thinking my carb could need rebuilding, maybe i have alot of carbon buildup on the cylinder walls, maybe the timing is a bit too high. Also i hear a tapping sound that increases coming from the passenger side of the engine, im thinking its a lifter. Now, with what info ive shared, do anyone have any suggestions as to what i need to replace? My car has 118k miles on it with the stock carb, and since i have about 6 hundred bucks left, what should i focus on replacing in my car? I dont seem to be burning much oil (its never low) and do get the bow tie salute when i start her up every few times a day. Any help would be greatly appreciated

check for vacuum leaks first. High water temp. can be caused by a bad water thermastate (sp) or retarded timing. If you have checked you idle remember that the harmonic balancer can rotate on it self internal and give incorrect timing. Have you tried to adjust the idle mixture screws? I had the smell of exhaust also when I removed my cat. I relaced my carb and that helped but not until I put a new cat (emmision tests) did I get rid of the exhaust smell.
