Rebuilding Heads
Rebuilding Heads
Tried some searches and found a lot of good information on porting heads. But where can I get some "detailed" info for the steps/processes involved in breaking down a set of heads (tools needed, parts needed, etc.) and rebuilding them. I have an L69 engine that I would like to get started on, and I want to tackle the heads first. I want to do as much as possible in house. Budget is a priority, except I am willing to buy whatever tools needed, since they sort of pay for themselves. I will be replacing the cam and installing whatever springs that are specified.
Thanks

here's what i do, short version. to take the springs off i have a 3/4" piece od pipe with a cap on it. set it on the retainer and smack with hammer, the keepers will come off, repete as required. remove spring and related parts. if there is a burr on the valve stem i file it off. remove valves, i don't number anything other than keeping intake and exhaust parts seperate. guy i work with grinds my valves and seats for me. to rebuild i add new seals, lube the valves and valve seats with briggs& stratton valve guide lube put the springs and retainers back on. there is also installed height to consider, spring seat preasure to be checked, all depending on how far into it you want to get. most manuals have a section on heads in them, read it.
