Is it worth the risk?

Hi everyone!

So I'm looking in to a 1991 Camaro Z28 305 TPI auto. It has 57k miles, and the interior is in decent condition. However, the fuel pump is broken so I can't test drive it. The exterior needs a lot of work, and the car looks like it's been in a minor accident. The person who's selling it only wants 1k for it, so I'm thinking it's worth it. Is there anything else I should look for, or do you think, once the fuel pump is replaced, it'll be good?

Have you thought about doing a car fax? Idk man, I've never seen a fuel pump go out with that low of mileage. Doesn't mean it can't happen but if it's in that rough of a shape with that low mileage it sounds fishy.

Try to bang on the tank while someone cranks the car see if the fuel pump starts up. Works at work most of the time when the tow truck pulls them in so I don't have to push them in the shop.

talk him down to around $750-$800 and its worth that in parts and scrap if it ends up being a dud. that mileage is pretty low for a fuel pump to go out, but if its been sitting for a while it wouldn't surprise me all that much

don't know where you are but around here a non-running 91wouldn't fetch near $1000 unless the exterior and interior were fresh. from your description I'd say you're buying a parts car.

A 91/92 z car, if not totally junk it's worth it.

Make sure it's a real z28

Checked the Carfax. No reported accidents, mileage seems accurate. I'll do the fuel pump whacking trick with the hammer to see if it works. As to the general condition of the car, the interior is rather perfect, so I doubt the car was beat on too hard. It looks like it's only been through a few parking lot scrapes. It is definitely a real Z28 though.

Edit: I'm also in Orlando, where a parts car RS with a 305 is going for around 1k, and running Z28s are around 2-3k.

Careful if you fix his car before buying. I can already hear the guy, "Well now that its running I need 1500 out of it..." lmao

My first thought. You could make an offer $ XXX if I get it running here, and it has forward/reverse.

I would pass on this one. There could have insurmountable problems that you can't detect without driving it. The transmission, differential, front suspension, the engine could be shot, or maybe all the above... Use your imagination.

Re: Is it worth the risk?

My feeling is any component of a used car that you can't operate to test probably needs to be considered non-functional. In your case, pretty much the whole drivetrain.
