"Dwell" variation goes back to breaker point ignition systems.
Dwell is a measure of how long the ignition points remain closed, in degrees of breaker point CAM rotation. Typically 29-33* on V8's. Dwell variation is dwell not holding consistent. Usually caused by worn distributor shaft and shaft bushings. It could also be caused by uneven wear on the breaker point cam.
Measuring dwell is done with a dwell meter, that was analog, back up to the 1970's. If the needle moves around, instead of remaining steady, you have dwell variation.
