Ticking noise followed by bang.

I was driving my car on the freeway when i heard an unusual ticking as I accelerated that would go away when i took my foot off the gas. As I drove it got louder, then right as i was telling my passenger i was going to pull off at the next exit there was a loud bang, heard what sounded like metal flying up from the road and hitting the under side of my car, huge cloud of white smoke behind me. Pulled over to the side of the freeway where it was clearly struggling to stay alive so I shut it off, when i tried to turn it on to move it further away from the road it would crank but wouldn't catch. Any ideas on what in the world blew up?

That sound was your car telling you to sell it and buy a 1982 to 1992 Chevy Camaro or Pontiac Firebird then all your problems will be solved .

This repair does wonders for the love life , too ....

You don't hear about this nearly as much as you used to, what with it being the digital age and all. Back before the invention of the digital display that counted down to zero before the earth shattering KA-BOOM! time bombs had to use mechanical timers that ticked. The dead give away is the 'tick-tick-tick-tick-tick' before the KA-BOOM!
