gas odor from near filler door
Ever since I had the fuel pump changed two weeks ago, I can smell gas from the left rear wheel well and around the filler door all the time. The car NEVER had a gas smell before. Also, the day after i got the car back from the shop I filled it up and put the cap back on. Next thing I know there's gas overflowing out of the filler door and spilling on the ground. I removed the cap to see if I had put it on properly and sure enough I had. The one thing that struck me though, was that the tank was throwing up the gas that i had put in it. A whole lot of gas came back out when I took the cap off. Since then every time I put gas in it, doesn't matter if the tank is full or not, gas will come out from around the cap and drip down the side of the car. Another thing i noticed is that the gas pump nozzle doesn't go all the way down the filler neck like it used too. There's some kind of obstruction in it now.
Could the reason for the overflowing tank and gas odor be a blocked vent or something? I'd like to have an idea of what could be wrong before I go back to the shop to raise hell. I'd rather tell them what to look for than to have them blindly poke around and fix nothing.

Well it most likely isn't vapor lock but.. there is a ventilator cap under the car near the rear end. All kinds of dirt and **** gets up in it and maybe its clogged. It couldn't hurt cleaning it out. Its on the drivers side in front of the gas tank. Its attached to the back seat well.

i have the same problem on my 85 z. i had the electric fuel pump taken out and went with a mechanical pump. (gonna go back to electric soon) now i get the raw gas smell coming from the rear of the car and when i fill it up i notice it comes out all over the side of the car after i drive it. also i see that my filler neck does not seem to be centered it looks like it's low and resting on the lip. i dunno it that has anything to do with it. im gonna check it out one day but it's to damn cold out lol.
Bobby, sounds like a broken filler neck. I just purchased a car that had a new fuel pump recently installed. I started smelling gas a few days after I bought it after filling it up. As soon as I pulled over, I saw gas pouring out of the car. The filler neck was broken when they pulled the tank and it was also sitting to one side and leaning on the lip. The people this guy had work on his car were terrible. Everything they touched, they ruined. I haven't tied to fix mine yet, I may try some good chemical safe goop and see if i can't fix the leak without having to replace the tank.

Man. I hope they didn't break the filler neck on my car. I checked it and it isn't loose but it could be slightly off center, or maybe it's just my imagination. Also, I can hear a pretty loud clunking sound from the rear of the car when pulling into parking lots, driveways, etc. It almost sounds like the tank might be loose and shifts around. I hear the same sound when i start the car too. Maybe they didn't weld the exhaust back properly after putting the tank back in. Jeez, I hate this... get one problem fixed and they give you ten more worry about. @#$%ing ******!

. In case you're wondering where home is, it's the same country India's threatening to wage war against. We get a lot of cool stuff in the junkyards there. Momo and Nardi wheels are plentiful. The wheel I have is an simple 80s design - leather wrapped grip with red stitching on a blackened spyder with a simple red Momo logo etched into it. Looks a lot like a Grant GT wheel but the grip feels MUCH better. I just wish I had a horn button for it. Thread
