Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Have a set of Pistons listed in thread name, they are great Pistons that have a ton of work into them; each piston in the set is equal down to the gram. Well they went threw an engine failure where the valve seat dropped out of aluminum heads and messed up a piston pretty bad.
I want to run these Pistons in my engine I'm building, but I cannot find one, or even a set of these since they are discontinued and nobody is selling them on eBay etc.
This one is pretty narly but I am fairly confident that I can salvage it by grinding it down, checking for major cracks, and welding it up. They are solid domes.
What do you guys think?
It didn't 100% go threw but it's bugged down there.
If somebody has this piston and wants to sell, let me know as well, cause I'd rather go that route.
Well, I guess anything is possible. I've seen top fuel heads after a major failure being repaired...stuff you wouldn't think could be fixed. But they have so much money / hours in the heads, it's worth spending a lot to repair them. Here, it would be hard to justify the cost of having someone do it, I would think. If you can do it yourself, and really know what you are doing, then maybe. But I think I'd be looking a new pistons myself.
I wouldn't pay anybody to do anything on my car, it's my imagination, creation, and pride
I don't think I am comfortable putting it in a $15,000 engine for it to fail and destroy it. If I can't find one within the week I'll go with my smaller domes I have. Sucks they are nice Pistons and really nice H beam rods. Other set are pressed, these are floating.
Yeah I saw that haha.
i was thinking if I Milled down the center section on all of them to be able to run those, with all that effort I could just use another piston though....think I should give the company a call an see if they have anything laying around? Who knows maybe they will sucker me into buying new ones
I found these Falcons.

i can't remember at this second will have to look at my note book when I go on lunch break. It's 13 something.
Hypertecnic are a no no for this application, would feel better welding the old one
May be a little out of the box but I wonder if somebody would Axtually make one for me? Thanks a ton for helping me try to find one also.
For what it would cost to repair that heavy-azz stock replacement truck part, you can probably buy a whole set of FAR superior ones.
If you can't find a matching direct replacement and then weight-match it, time to move on.
It's not a question of, "can it be done". It's only barely even a question of, "is it A Good Idea". (NOT) It's a question of, I'm standing at point B, and I want to get to point A; is this The Best Way? again, not.
I found a guy in Michigan that has a ton of TRW pistons. I emailed him for you.
Unfortunately, he does not have the 1 piston you are looking for, but he is saving my email in case he runs across one.
I will let you know if he contacts me.
Look up Johnsons Speed Warehouse on ebay.
Is that the way your domes came, or were they machined down?
Was there an even higher compression piston like yours that could have the dome cut down to match your piston?
And what would that TRW number be?
Similar to my 302 Chevy pistons. The 11:1 piston was L2209AF, the 12.5:1 was L2210AF.
The only difference was the height of the domes.
