Car: 1982 z/28 Right hand drive
Engine: 377 AFR195 750DP Solid cam 10.25:1
Transmission: TH/350 3200 stall spohn conversion
Axle/Gears: 10 bolt 3.42:1 Eaton Trutrac.
SP 383 GM

currently running a stock bottom end 2 bolt 408,,with L31 vortec heads
750dp 1 3/4 headers th350,, eaton trutrac 3.42 and M/T street et tires.
car is consistant at 13.1 @107mph.
engine is still fresh but i want to move up to another 50hp setup thats a bit stronger than the old 1976 400 +0.60.
its goot great oil pressure and its well tuned but flat out at 5200rpm.

looking at the GM SP383 complete motor at a real good price
or a CNC Motorsport 427 dart SHP long motor they sell for around $9000

whate your view on this swap to get me into the 12.8,,12.9 et or better.

i think my poor ol 408 is maxed out and with stock heads and unless i get another rotating assembly and bring it up to 10.05:1 and get some bigger heads.
its currently at 8.5:1 with the cam fitted

current setup ,,,,carb was setup on an advanced o2 dyno and its really good and engine now advances fast with the MSD pro billet distributor springs swaped to lighter spring.

maybe i can revamp my engine or step up to an SP383 for $7500 or less

if you have any confidence in engine building I would just rework what you have already. It would cost alot less the 7500 bucks.

Some new heads promaxx, afr, or something like that. 1000-1500 for a pair. Performer rpm air gap. 250 bucks, roller conversion with all parts needed 1200 bucks. New rotating assembly 1000 bucks rated at 500hp+ for 4000-5000 bucks you can have a 500hp 383 or 406 any day.

My set up ran 11.60s quarter mile and that was with 11.1:1 compression. 750 Holley carb, performer rpm intake, 1.6 gold comp rocker arms, eagle rotating assembly, 2 bolt 350 block 385 cubic inch. Old dart 200cc iron heads, doughs 1 3/4 long tube headers. Comp cam xe268.

I've recently added competition 195 afr heads, solid roller swap xr288r and a tall version of a victor jr. Hoping for low 11s high 10s come spring.

Re: SP 383 GM

My only issue is that i still have that old block that is 41 years old and i could sell this motor for $4500 or more as is and tip in $4000 and have a brand spankin unit.

the parts are cheap now and thats the good side of revamping the old 408.

a really good rotating assembly from scat or eagle is only $1800 and thats pistons included.
a top end kit from Dart, heads intake around $1500 or complete AFR top end kit $1800.

i allready have a great intake, street HP blueprinted carb thats been setup properly and MSD pro billet,,
i guess its cheaper to rework the old motor.

CNC motorsports has reliable 427 dart setups in crate motors for under 9k
and allthough i dont know these guys i did speak to chris and he is pretty honest and AFR even reccomends them guys and shafiroff in NY do a crate 427 for around 10k.

I got tax on top as i am in australia and import is cheap , but tax will run $800 at least.

i dont want to get into high stall convertors as i drive this car in traffic and its a good road car.

its a hard one.
i will look today at what summit has on offer as far as parts go,..and check prices.

that 383 GM crate motor looks great but i wish they offered a 427 i would buy it today and sell my motor.

Re: SP 383 GM

i think its a blue print motor and i dont think its as good as the actual GM block and bits GM use..

i think all that blueprint stuff is chinese and not as good as scat or eagle and the heads on blueprint are a fair bit behind the others. .

but if its a GM blockband all the good american bits i am very interested
thanks mate will look at it

Look here: http://www.competitionproducts.com/D...products/1647/
Also look at these categories on the left of the page:
Engines and Short Block Assemblies
Engine/Short Block Kits
Engine Kits and Rotating Assemblies

And be sure to check the Broom Sheet Clearances - great deals there sometimes.

Here's a COMPLETE 427: http://www.competitionproducts.com/P.../#.WhDoTWRaPct
Title says 509 HP, description below says 590. I emailed CC about it.
Here is a 427 short block: http://www.competitionproducts.com/D.../#.WhDp62RaPcs
$5000. If you can get 4000 for yours, then you are upgraded for not much $$$$.

New to these companies as i live in Australia competetion products seems like a big outfit...,,,,,,,,,,,,
my friend darrin bought a long time ago a complete engine from summit,,it was sold as a world products motown 427.
when it was imported to australia he said he couldnt get it to start, had no documents,no info,no nothin,,he took it to a workshop who eventually got it started and after some time ,,it was ran and couldnt break 13.3 et,,this is in a 1968 vette with 336 rear end.
they had no idea what compression it had,,,eventually had to put a 3500 stall converter in it and it ran better and was driveable...eventually blew a head gasket,,,was pulled down and was found to be all no name internals,,my friend put new rings and bearings in it and sold the car he loved... thats why i an reluctant to buy blue print stuff,,its way cheaply priced and i think i can do better for a few bucks more..

I have contacted Scat to set my up a parts list for a +060 400 motor to drop a new Forged rotating assembly in and milodon 4 bolt cap conversion is only $315.

my block may be +060 but its got good cylinder pressure,,hold great oil pressure,no smoke,no fumes,no rattles. got a little piston noise.

i can sell it for $4500 i guess with carb.

you can sell it for 4500 bucks... Dang expensive over there. You could build a 450-500hp 383 engine easy for that much here.

My blocks a 1971.... it's literly 46 years old

Hey there,

I'm interested how this worked out for you, I am considering going from stock vortec heads to the AFR Vortec 195's and want to know how much of a difference I can expect with my 383 and voodoo 103 cam (268 cam basically) before I spend the dough..

IMHO: Do a compression check and if all cylinders are within 5%? Do an AFR or Brodix Top End kit and Comp Cams XR282HR. Then tune tune tune.

Good Luck,

that sp383 is a great motor for $6250 or whatever but i now read its at its best with 3.7:1 or 4.1:1 and a 2500 to 3000 stall...i am not going there,

a beautifull motor i love is the zz427 GM crate motor...but its a big block
