Power steering fluid

I own a 1984 Camaro Sport Coup with the 305 V8 and I am replacing the power steering pump. What is the correct power steering fluid I should be using in this car? The owners manual says to use GM power steering fluid. Is there an equivalent fluid I can get at Autozone or any auto parts store without going to a dealership? Thanks!

Re: Power steering fluid

Any power steering fluid brand or you can just use Dexron II/III oil. It's all hydraulic fluid.

Thanks! But Dexron II and III are no longer available. Can I use Dexron 6 instead?

The III/IV is still available, but any of them should be fine. I just buy the Preston or Valvoline power steering fluid at Advance Auto

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Power steering fluid

Dexron whatever # they're up to now is backward compatible.

But power steering fluid might actually cost less, and is "the right" thing for whatever that's worth, and is eeeeeezy to get, so just use that.
