Power steering pump question
Power steering pump question
I just purchased a new a.c. Delco power steering pump. I have another pump with a chrome reservoir and a bad pump installed in it. How hard is it to remove the pump out of the new Delco unit and swap it into the chrome reservoir. Will i need to buy a seal kit or anything
also I've never pressed a pulley onto one of these. Do you need the specialty tool? Can it be done with a shop press? Can you press it on to far?

Re: Power steering pump question
It's not too difficult. The complete seal kit is like $15. If the shaft bushing is still relatively tight, leave it alone. Don't try to pull the shaft out of the bushing unless you intend to change the bushing, because the rust and crud that normally forms between the front of the bushing and the pulley will destroy the bushing.
As long as you watch what you're doing, you'll probably only need to replace the big O-ring around the pump, and the two or three small ones between the pump and bolt holes in the reservoir.
If you want to go hog wild and rebuild the pump while it's out, the only difficult part is the front bushing. It's a press fit in and out, and not much fun to change. The rest is just cleaning and O-rings.
The pulley requires a special puller. You can "rent" one from VatoZone or whatever local chain store, or pick one up from Harbor Freight. The tool is setup to pull the pulley and press it back on.
Before you get started, make sure your chrome reservoir is going to physically fit, because while the pumps are pretty much universal, the reservoirs can vary with regards to # of bolt holes, return tube position, etc.

Re: Power steering pump question
What Drew said. They're very easy to pop the pump out of the reservoir. All you need is the paper & rubber kit. The big O-ring (about 4" dia) in the front, and acoupla smaller ones on the rear, around fittings & bolts. The pressure relief fitting and I think maybe 2 bolts on the rear is all that holds it in.
I don't think the pulley actually "has to" come off.
Be VERY careful not to distort the reservoir in the process. They're surprisingly fragile, and are about GUARANTEED to leak if bent even slightly.
