HEI/ Tach issues

HEI/ Tach issues
Hey all. Been here for awhile but usually just keep pretty quiet.
Got a question.
Last season my coil went on me. Replaced it. Started right up. Ran for a couple months, went again. Figured was the module. Had a spare one, swapped it out. New coil. Nothing. Wouldn’t start at all. Parked it for the winter.
Now I disconnected the tach thinking it might be grounding somewhere and BOOM off to the races we go.
I believe it was just the tach wire. Went over all the other wires, they all seem fine with good clean connections.
Any other thoughts?
88 with crate 350, MSD HEI distributor. Only a few thousand miles on it.
Thanks.
Gord!!

Re: HEI/ Tach issues
That is interesting, it’s entirely possible. You could measure resistance to ground through the tach wire. Not sure what it should read off the top of my head but initial thought is you should see some resistance.

Thanks for the response.
Yeah, I will have to measure it. Everything else checked out, which kinda stumped me a bit. I narrowed it down to the tach, and as soon as I disconnected it, she fired right up, no questions asked.
I haven't touched it since, well the tach issue anyways, as I don't really run her too hard, so not a big concern. However, once in awhile I do get mad at my tires, and like to teach them a lesson

Re: HEI/ Tach issues
Probably not the tach "wire"; but close.
There's a "filter" on the firewall. It's a small cylindrical thing that the wire sorta goes through, to filter out engine electrical noise and keep it from getting into the car interior. That's probably what's failed short.
Yes, tires are in the same class as the liver: they are evil and must be punished from time to time.
