Speedometer Working Sometime

I have a 1991 Camaro RS with a 3.1L engine. Sometimes the speedometer doesn't work. It seems like when it is cold out that the speedometer doesn't work and then all of a sudden it will start to work but bounce up and down. Then it will settle down and work correctly. It takes about 10-15 minutes of driving and it will start to work. I would like to get this fixed so I won;t get a ticket before the speedo starts to work.

usually indicates it needs lube

graphite.. but it is a pain. you have to lube it from the top.. as in by taking off the cable behind the speedo.

Can I just pull the cluster out of the dash and remove the cable that wayor is there some other way to do it. If so do I just put it back in from the top or is there something else that I need to do?

You don't have a cable speedometer you have a 91. You are probably going to have to replace the gauge. Lubing it may help a little but if that doesn’t work just need to replace it. You can buy them for cheap off ebay.

How would I go about lubing the speedometer? Is there a special tool or something?

Re: Speedometer Working Sometime

When did the Camaro ditch the speedo cable 90 or so?
The birds did away with them in 86 or so??

sounds like you need to remove the speedo sending unit on the side of the trans and check out whats going on in there.
