CODE 45 1984 5.0L Carb
CODE 45 1984 5.0L Carb
I've glanced through the forum to find out how to fix a Rich Condition(code45) or what might be causing this but didn't see anything much on the carb side. Anyone got any ideas where I should start looking. Quick overview . The motor runs good. Idle's High sometimes around 1200 or so usually after warms up it is ok, I have recently noticed her surge at idle when I was taking the t-tops off. Under heavy throttle she seems to want to bog down also. I have a heavy catalytic converter smell also. Any thoughts would be great.

Re: CODE 45 1984 5.0L Carb
in my experience the most likely causes
1) choke not opening completely when engine warm
2) failed CTS or CTS pigtail not providing the ECM a true temp reading causing the ECM to continue to enrich a 'cold' motor
3) leaking well plugs bottom of carburetor
inspect your cts on the water neck and especially the connector, which takes a beating from the proximity of the AIR line going across it. shorting the CTS leads will send a 'full hot' signal to ECM.
ensure the choke blades are full straight up when engine is warm
pull carb, fill with gas and let sit over something that will show whether it's leaking or not. OR just epoxy over the plugs that are prone to leak. a search for well plugs and sofakingdom should provide some guidance and photos
there are other possible causes of course and a scanner that reads real time data would help, but I'd start with the above.

Thanks. I have found a couple vacuum lines that were broke. I found one that runs beside the passenger side near the rear spark plug has come off not sure were it goes back.

probably the one that goes to the EFE valve between the pass exhaust manifold and y-pipe. Just plug it up for now.
