1982 z28 steering wheel nut

Hey folks. I bought an 82 z28 and the steering wheel was off, no nut to be found.

I know these had a nut and a retainer of sorts on them. Can someone tell me what size nut fits the shaft that holds the steering wheel on?

The first few threads are a bit chewed up, biggest die I have is a 1/2 x 20 and it doesnt fit it. So I'm thinking it's a 9/16 or metric. 14mm nut.

For an 82-87 it's a 1/2-20 hex nut.
Went to M14x1.5 in '88.

Theres a retainer clip that slides over the nut and hugs the threads to prevent the nut from backing off.

Re: 1982 z28 steering wheel nut

I think someone's pulled the switcheroo on me with the column. I picked up a 1/2×20 nut today from home depot and there's no way its gonna go. I'm gonna grab a m14x1.5 here in the next week or so to try that. All they had was a 9/16x12(I think) and it was fairly close but I didn't wanna chew up any threads trying to make it go.
