Truck Vortec Heads

So I had another thread going about a Crate Engine but decided to wait for next Spring.
But for now, I can get a set of Vortec Heads off a 1997 Truck Engine for $100.
Pretty sure there’s well over 200k KMS on the Engine.
Would I need to do any work to these Heads and can they just bolt on to my 87 L98 TPI ENGINE with the Scoggin Dickies Intake?

Re: Truck Vortec Heads

Probably should rebuild them

FYI - ALL Vortec heads are from truck engines. The 5.7 Vortec was not used in cars.

Make sure you check for cracks. The center bolt hole and the two middle exhaust ports are most know I think. Don't quote me on that though. Also depending on what cam you are running. The max lift varies from whoever you talk to. I have read everything from .420 to .480

I will say I have run .480-.490 lift numerous times and do not worry about it. I have checked enough sets that I don't even measure until the cam gets to 0.500 lift. At that point the cam needs better springs anyway.

Re: Truck Vortec Heads

I would rebuild them and have them checked for cracks. Make sure they are 350 heads not 305 heads

Re: Truck Vortec Heads

Is this a budget build or do you plan on it lasting long? Cause I got kinda the same thing, some 200k vortecs and I'm just gonna mod em myself and use em but I don't expect them to last forever and they aren't going on a new/fresh engine. I plan to check them for cracks myself and expect to find some small ones, I'll burn that bridge when I get there LOL At the least you'll prob need to lap them and their are tons of diff opinions on lapping(again see 1st sentence). Anyways if you wanna check out my build to see how it turns out, check out my youtube channel, I'm documenting my experience. I'm sure it will **** of tons of internet experts LOL
