$$%^%^ help quick please! Cam degreing. Dumb question.

Im right now installing a crane solid lift cam in the camaro. I want to run it advanced but I cant remember if I had it advanced with the old cam.
The advance marks on the crank are unreadable anymore. I have the ballancer mark at the timing tab dead center the cam gear is pointing down dead center. Im thinking its set to zero???? But im sure I advanced it when I build the engine 2 1/2 years ago. This cam better get me into the low 12's. crane SNS #110982

SSC,

If I'm understanding you correctly, you have the crankshaft at the TDC position for the #1 cylinder. This is a basic starting point, but you need to find the lobe centerline on the cam to determine the actual position of the cam relative to the crank. You should have a degree wheel connected to the crank and a dial indicator on the cam to degree the cam correctly.

The Comp Cams web site used to have an instruction set for degreeing a cam properly. You might be able to download some data there.

Plus you can do what I did (I cheated ).

I found a pic online of a degree wheel, saved it, printed it larger. Then cut it out, glued it on some press board (the thick cardboard stuff) and whalaah!!! Now I have a degree wheel.

Before the internet, I had one that I made out of cardboard. Started with a protractor, marked it off, then used a straight edge to mark it off on the outside edge of the "wheel". I think I still actually have it.

I'm a cheap bastard,

AJ

i'm not sure i understand your question so my answer may be a bit off, but if you want to advanve your cam you can buy a timing gear set with 3 keys ways cut in it, advanced, straight up, and retarded. you should alos read your cam card to see if the cam is ground advanced, most are and see where crane says to install it.

Thankis for they replieys guys, I got it figured out, Doh! When I got to pulling the distributor (I probably should have checked that before I posted) It was pointing to 6 and the lifters for six were down so I was able to detrmine by all the signs that the cam was set straight up 0. As far as crane specs, they want the cam @ so I just left it. All so I can win a cheezy trophy at the end of this year. Oh well I got another hour in the car before its running. Guess I'll see if the cam made a big difference soon.
Thanks again
