I've got the factory service manual but I haven't found any order of things to throw my short block together

I could buy a book but that seems almost overkill. Would any of you recommend a particular book?

The long block has been prepped by a machine shop and all parts to match are on hand.

Here's the assembly order I think is optimal...

1. Generally air blow out block, oil galleries, coolant areas, etc
2. Install camshaft
3. Check for bearing gap spec and install crankshaft - also rear seal?
4. Install rings/pistons, check for bearing clearance spec, install piston rod caps
5. Timing set and front seal/cover
6. Heads
7. Lifters, rods, rockers
8. Valve covers
9. Intake and exhaust manifolds
10. Pre-lube
11. Install engine
12. Install accessories...

Give all parts to machine shop and have them assemble short block or even the long block.

Alky, thanks, I could have done that but I want to do this myself. I'll be working with my sons and want them to get their hands on an engine.

Don, I appreciate the kind offer. Although we are both in LA, with traffic, getting down to where you are, for me, is a road trip! I did get the pistons you recommended.

I install cam last because i degree them in withthe timing chain, so you need the crank and rods/pistons in first

That is true but I was thinking might be a good way to protect the cam and cam bearings from dings and dust by having it already in there. Either way I suppose...

Could ding it sliding rods down in. Leave the cam in the box til you are ready

Ok, lets try this.....
First get the correct taps and clean out all the bolt holes.
Then blow out everything and take it to get it power washed.
When done with that spray with WD 40 and wrap with a plastic bag.
Keep it wrap at all times except when working on it.
Do not mix up the main caps, they are in order. 12345
You will be installing the main bearings first.
Uppers and lowers are different. get familiar with those so you understand
the difference.
Then you will be installing the crank and checking clearances.

Your order is fine, I do the cam later. Clean, clean, clean is the first step. And yes, that rear main needs to go in on the final install of the crank. Don’t forget the oil pump and pan.

Read an article with a good point bout the cam not long ago. Test fit the cam 1st to make sure the cam bearings aren't too tight cause it's better to find out before installing anything else in case you need to replace a bearing. I don't assemble engines all the time so don't a have a routine but I usually make a list or I forget stuff LOL
