82-84 Crossfire fuel sending unit

The whole sending unit for my 83 CFI is toast. What modifications will be required to make an 85+ unit work? I plan on using the CFI pump.

Re: 82-84 Crossfire fuel sending unit

AFAIK you can use ANY later model 3rd gen TBI setup. (88 - 92) Tank, pump, & "module" incl sending unit. Because that's what CFI is at its core... TBI. Uses similar fuel pressure and all that. In fact I seriously doubt that there's any difference between the CFI pump itself and the later TBI pump except for learning from experience and making it better (yeah right) and any "fitment" and minor issues like that, electrical connections for example.

That's what I am hoping for. But, I don't understand why no vendor carries this part and no vendor can tell me what the difference is. I'll just have to buy one and see what needs to be changed, if anything. I will update this thread. Thanks.

Re: 82-84 Crossfire fuel sending unit

IIRC the 82-84 cars had the pick-up wiring connector located on the drivers side frame rail in the back of the car. Around 86 GM changed the tank wiring and the connector was a body pass thru style mounted behind the rear seat backrest. So; you might have some custom wiring to perform if you use a later fuel injected tank pick-up. ( I haven't had a Crossfire car in a LONG time and can't FOR SURE remember where the pick-up connector is,....... )

Also keep in mind that you have to check the wiring configuration at the plug to be sure they match up. ( don't take it for granted ! ) Any factory sending unit with a in-tank pump has 3 wires,......... Fuel Level, Ground, and Pump; just be sure they in the same positions on both sides of plugs when connected..
