Re: RARE PART
The Fuel pump sending units should be similar from 82-92 on all FI cars, the difference being you have the CFI, therefore the pump would be different. You might not be able to get it from GM, but some aftermarket company should have something to work...
If you need just the pump you should be able to find it somewhere, the entire exact unit that drops into the tank may be more difficult to find. You might be able to modify a TPI unit with the correct pump...

Re: RARE PART
I never knew the CFI motor used an in-tank pump. Makes sense of course. Strange the TPI one is different! What about the TBI one?

Re: RARE PART
thanks for that. my dads actually the mechanic, i just gotta do all the diggin' around. but i think that helps. as of now were deciding to try a sending unit from an 85 5.0L 305cid V8 MFI from rockauto.com with an 82 fuel pump.
what is the harness code mean for the sending unit? i believe it has something to do with wiring? the 85 sending unit im getting says
"SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # FG20A
Sending Unit; w/ Harness Codes: FPH, FEG, FES"

Re: RARE PART
i was looking at rockauto.com sending units under 85 camaro's it says 5.0L 305cid V8 MFI.
i was told it is multi fuel injection i believe? so i was hoping on being able to use that in my 82 5.0L 305cid V8 FI.
im not too framiliar with all this so dont take my word for much

Re: RARE PART
The harness codes are the broadcast codes used to identify the parts on the assembly line. Any fuel pump hanger/sending unit assembly from a fuel injected car should be close if not identical. Some might have different connectors, but it shouldn't be difficult to adapt any FI hanger.
MFI would be a bastardization of the MPFI abbreviation. MPFI is multiport fuel injection. MPFI is multiple injectors. In other words, TPI is a MPFI system. TBI is just that, TBI. To be honest I don't think there's any difference between the hangers/sending units on TBI and TPI cars, the difference is the pump.

MFI / MPFI = Multi Point Fuel Injection
TPI = Tuned Port Injection (usually named so because of the Tuned runers, or equal length runners)
SFI = Sequential Fuel Injection (basically same as MPFI but the injector pulse is timed for when the valve is open or just before it opens)
EFI = Electronic Fuel Injection
TBI = Throttle Body Injection
CFI = Cross Fire Injection
By the 80's all cars were EFI, the term was commonly used on Trucks, which usedthe TBI system. EFI was to distinguish between the early Fuel Injected cars from the late 50's & 60's.
Technically all of our cars which are Fuel Injected are EFI, All TPI cars are MPFI, the CFI could technically also be called TBI, as the injectors are similar, the difference being the intake with two throttle bodies instead of one, TBI cars have on the TBI cars from 88+, the intake is almost identical to a 2 bbl intake.

Re: RARE PART
On the assembly line the hangers/sending units would have been completely assembled, maybe even so far as being in the tanks already. The broadcast code on the wiring harness was used to make sure the right parts ended up in the car. If you had the build sheet that was used on the line, the code on the sending unit would be on the sheet. The codes changed regularly and several are basically the same parts, so sometimes 3 or more codes will have the same service part. It doesn't really matter in this case since really all you need is a hanger that will work.
I wouldn't recommend ordering parts from someplace online. You'd be further ahead to put some tools in a box, and go to the junkyard. That way you can see the part before you pay for it, have it shipped to you, etc. It'll save you confusion and it might save you a 15% restocking fee.
