No crank at key after wiring up fans.
No crank at key after wiring up fans.
Hi, this is my first post on here although I've been using this site for over a year now building my 1992 camaro. It came with a 305 tbi motor but I have swapped to a carved 350 keeping the stock ignition wires going to the distributor and alternator wires. I wired the relay to click on with the ignition (green and white wire) instead of through the ops. I had set the fan relay up by making the brown wire go to a switch that when to ground and made the fan kick on. Test drove the car and it ran great and accelerated good, except the alternator was not charging. Found out the alternator ran through that fan relay in some way and that I had blown the fuse wiring it that way. I rewired it to the green/white wire to a switched ground and replaced the fan fuse with a 10a fuse. It had a 20a but I didn't have one at the moment.
well now the car will not crank by key but I can start and drive it by jumping the starter. It now runs very poor, stuttering on acceleration and even backfiring. I'm at a loss and running out of time to work on it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Put the wiring back like it belongs. Use the temp switch and otherwise make it back EXACTLY stock. Amazing how much better things work like that.
Believe it or don't, not everyone out here in Interwebz land knows more about wiring than the factory engineers.
Of course, replace the fuses that got blown by the mistaken wiring, once it's rectified. Again, amazing how much better things work that way.

You did that all in less than 20 minutes?
Anyways, I see no way the alternator would be run or mate up with the fans/relays, or a relay at all.
Maybe you got a bit lost in tracing the wires?
But right now, you turn the key on and nothing happens?

I had tried it before posting. But if I pull the fan fuse with the car running the alternator stops working (voltage drops). I read on here that they did use the fan fuse to power the alternator in a way.
I just remembered part of my problem, I had stuck the car into 1st (automatic) and forgot to put it back into park before trying to crank it a few times, now that I put it back into park it wont crank. Could that have caused an issue?

No, but it's possible you have a damages Neutral Starting Switch.
Does the SES light come on? Are you able to pull codes from the ALDL?
It's been awhile, I don't recall if VATs disables the starter relay or the injectors, but I assume all that might be bypassed/etc, since you went to carb?

I solved the issue, I believe I had set off the VATS. I pulled the starter relay and jumped the yellow wire and dark green wire and now the car fires by key and runs perfect again. I dont know what caused it to stumble the way it did because from what I read and like you said it should only control the starter and the tbi injectors which I do not have now
