Ignition Coil Replacement.

So, what all are you folks running these days, for a "hot" aftermarket coil? I'm talking remote mount, for a 350 TPI engine. My Fire Control C-4 coil failed on me this week, leaving me stranded at work, in parking lot. Cost me $160 to get a flatbed ride home. I confirmed no spark. Jumpered in an old coil, and fired right up. And tonight, i put back in, my previous coil, which was also from Jacobs Electronics, in the stock location with the stock engine harness. But with that, i cannot use my spark box, or hook up my column mounted digital tach. So i need an external coil, that i can just wire to 2 posts with ring terminals.
Any thoughts?

I have a 428 CJ Mustang that liked to eat coils. On that engine, they mount horizontally on the intake and apparently the air bubble in the oil filled ones was in a bad place. I put in an MSD Blaster High Vibration Epoxy filled coil #8222 about 7 or 8 years ago and that one seems to be rugged.

Well my C4 coil lasted 17 years, so i guess that was a win. I would think the spark box would fail first, since that is a much more complicated device. Those canister style coils are rugged, just not sure how to mount one. It would have to be horizontal for sure. I been looking at MSD and the Accel Super Coil.

Re: Ignition Coil Replacement.

My last coil was an Accel Chrome performance coil because I was trying to stay in the footprint of the factory cylindrical coil. That one only lasted a year or so and then started to go bad when it got hot. It took a while to track down because it mimicked vapor lock, but with an IR thermometer on it, it would start to fault out around 160-170F. It would break down and cause stalling in hot stop and go traffic, then clear out with some underhood air flow. That moved me to look for the epoxy coil. If you got 17 years out of what you have, that's certainly not bad, although I am surprised that it would die suddenly. I do think that the high output spark boxes do stress the coils much more than the oem systems.

What's wrong with a stock one?

I would like to run my multi-spark box, and it wont hook up to a stock coil. I also need a terminal to attach my tach wire to.
I been looking at a MSD 8207 Blaster SS coil. I will likely have to fabricate an adapter plate, to lock it down to the bracket.

Re: Ignition Coil Replacement.

Why do you want all that? Do you just enjoy having stuff in your car that breaks all the time and needs to be worked on?

I have MSD #8226. Works good so far. Engine is around 400HP, no high rev.
I had accel #140008 from the previous owner. It was still running strong after 20 years on the tired LB9 (305TPI). Just thought I'd put a new one after my engine swap.

It's Firewall mounted

Interesting opinion, duly noted. I have been reading some of the reviews on Summit website, regarding this coil. some folks had some bad experiences for sure. About 10% failure rate. I will look at DUI for sure.

Re: Ignition Coil Replacement.

It's interesting if there are reports of MSD having quality issues, I hadn't heard that before. I prefer to buy American, but sometimes the choices are limited. In my experience working with Chinese suppliers, there certainly can be inconsistency. Some are very good and some are not, so you can't make a blanket assumption. The best quality Chinese parts came from western companies that brought their production methods and quality processes to Chinese plants. The workers were very motivated and could make good product if they had good leadership. Good companies will take corrective action to fix the problems, so hopefully MSD fixes any issues they may have.

The stock ignition gear is more than enough to support a TPI engine. Anything more you're spending money for bragging rights.

True. But it can also be difficult to find *new* genuine components that aren't hot garbage now. The DUI stuff is good quality from a reputable supplier. It's just quality stock style replacement parts but I've used and recommended their stuff a bunch of times and haven't had a single problem yet.

Re: Ignition Coil Replacement.

I knew the founder of that company, Kelly Davis (RIP), back in the 70s when he worked at the local Delco jobber, rebuilding distributors. Fantastic guy. He came up with one of those old Sun machines; red with a kinda sloped front, that he had bought from somewhere and built them in his garage for his buds after work hours. Mine included. Eventually he started up that company. Passed it along to his son who as far as I can tell has kept up the family tradition. Good people.

Re: Ignition Coil Replacement.

Well, my new coil is in, went with a MSD Blaster SS coil. Just had to make an adapter plate, to hold it. I think it worked out well. This one is much easier to work with! Just hope it last 17 years like the last one!
