Crazy Acceleration

I recently got my 83 Camaro with a 93 350 up and running. It was missing on two cylinders. I replaced plugs, wires, and cleaned the injectors.
The miss is gone now and it’s really smooth.
The problem is that when I took it for a test drive, at a stop sign as soon I let off the brake pedal it red-lined like I was mashing the accelerator. I did not even touch the accelerator. It nearly killed me as I turning when it happened. I narrowly avoided the car that was passing by.

What would cause releasing the brake to activate the throttle? It did it a couple of times in park as well.

Re: Crazy Acceleration

Does it have cruise control? It's a cable driven throttle body. Something has to physically move it to make the engine rev up. If it doesn't move the engine will never have enough air to rev like that. So either figure out what moved (i.e. your foot moved the floor mat or cruise control was activated) or remove the gremlin that's pulling things while hopping around in your car.

Re: Crazy Acceleration

It does have cruise control. I have not tried to engage it so I don’t know if it works. Could the cruise malfunction and pull the throttle open?

I tried the replicate the problem in the garage, in park and it happened again. I push the brake all the way down, it idles fine. I let the brake off and it occasionally causes the throttle to open wide.

Re: Crazy Acceleration

I would disconnect the cruise to be sure but it sounds like a change in vacuum is causing your throttle to open for some reason. Take some picks of the swap and we can see if anything looks out of place

Re: Crazy Acceleration

I’ll disconnect the cruise first thing and test it out this evening.

So far from what I have made note of...

93 motor/transmission
93 fuel delivery system
93 cooling system
93 rear end with 4.10 gears

Everything else is 83

Tach/speedo do not work. The tach shows idling at 4000 rpms and climbing past 7000 on acceleration. The Speedo goes everywhere. Gas gauge doesn’t work. Oil pressure works, as well as temp.

Could the brake booster cause a big swing in vacuum? I do need to bleed the bakes. I changed the front caliper recently. There is definitely air in the lines.

I’ll upload pics later once I make it back home.

Re: Crazy Acceleration

So I disconnected the cruise control cable and it fixed the problem. During my test drive however, the left side brake caliper locked up and got really hot. By the time I got home it was smoking.
I ordered new brake lines for the front. The pads are new, as is the caliper.
