Gentlemen, Press Your Pushbuttons !
Sounds like you fixed it.
The starter wiring, along with most other wire sizes were chosen by a cheapskate.
The bad selections made by "engineers" cause a lot of people to throw away $$$$ on unneeded batteries.
Their cheapskate choices cause voltage drops and other problems in cars.
In my cars I have increased the wire sizes in the Starter, Fan, Blower, Rear Defog, and other circuits.
It greatly improves the performance of those systems.

Ignition switch. If the external push button start you added works every time, then it's most likely the "start" circuit contacts the ignition switch failing. Causes an intermittent no start like you have and just keeps getting worse. A lot of times, giving the steering column shaft a good whack with your hand will make it work again (briefly), on our cars you'd have to remove the under dash panel to do that.
Fairly common problem across various GM cars from the 80s and 90s that all used that same steering column. It's not fun to fix, the ignition switch is mounted directly on top of the column down near the floor. Some people say they have replaced it without dropping the column down, but I never could. So plan on having to do that.
