If you are getting gears to fit your current carrier, 3.73 gears are available to fit a 2-series carrier.
If you are getting gears and a carrier, then stick with 3-series for both.
The "adapter" is simply a spacer that goes between a 2-series carrier and a 3-series gear. Works, but generally not recommended if it can be avoided.

why is it bad putting a series 3 3.73 gears on a series 2 carrier with an adapter?
