Break up at 4K

I just bought a 1984 T/A as a daily driver last weekend. I got the car from a friend of mine really cheap - It has an LG4 5.0 with a 5 speed - When you wind the car out over 4 grand, it starts to break up and make a mellow popping sound - Could it be the cam, lifters, heads, something simple??? Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance
