He said it runs but needs work. Thoughts???? What should i look out for? Im gonna look at it tomorrow. i do know its got t tops. thanks in advance

Rust, cancer, rot, rust, ... oh did I forget to mention RUST? Definitely look for that.
Other than that, overall condition; not so much whether the paint is still good or things like that (although of course it matters), but more, is it all there, is is completely worn out and falling to pieces, has somebody has their dykes in the wiring, has it been maintained, what kind of condition are the door & T-top rubber seals in. Pretty much the same things you'd inspect on any antique car. Since these aren't real popular "resto" cars like late 69s Camaro, lots of that stuff is REAL hard to get; no repop places bother with it.
From the photos, it isn't terrible. It need some upholstery, some paint and exterior trim work, and likely has some mechanical issues depending on mileage. If it runs, drives, steers, and stops it's probably worth it.
I'd have to see up under it to make that call. Could be like one that somebody posted here some time back, where the rear control arm mounts were about to rot through.
When looking at a Salt Belt car, the shiny side isn't what matters. It's the rubber side.
Mostly, just looks like an old car. Lots of wear and tear. Could be a good resto project if the body is in restorable shape. I.e. no swiss cheese, holes in the floor pan, etc. I guess whether that's "the car for you" depends on what you're looking for.
Like the others said, what matters is the shape of the underbody and if its what you are looking for (color, options, etc). If that car is somewhat clean underneath and the floors/t-top bar isn't disintegrated at $1700 I'd say its a steal...you can't touch a decent third gen in my area for that kind of money. I am also a sucker for blue IROCs
ok looked it over closer 8th digit is an 8. Also service parts id confirms IROC and other interesting options rear disc... limited slip. Underside looks good. rust hole on drivers side floor, Owner said engine revs high going down road and has different 350
The rusted floor is an issue; there's likely to be more rust where you can't see it (or haven't yet looked), especially in the T-top bar and the A-pillars. The torn-up passenger seat indicates that this car has had a lot of use, as does the non-original engine.
The price isn't out of line---providing the car actually runs and drives reasonably okay.
What are the car's immediate needs?
What are your expectations from this vehicle; is it going to be a project car or are you buying it to drive it as-is?
Honestly I have enough projects. But I see this car sitting in the parking lot and it just intrigues me it looks cool. I won't be able to tell the pillars and the t-bar without taking the glass out correct? I'm a pretty good mechanic so to get it roadworthy I think would be easy. But at the end of the day everything's pretty expensive really. And spending money here would be diluting my other projects. But I have to have it LOL

A running and driving IROC that isn't all rotted out is a good buy at $1,700
Putting the correct front ground effect on it will help it drastically. Paint the headlight buckets black like they're supposed to be, and replace the broken hood louvers.
87 seats are super hard to find....especially leather. So you may have to settle for cloth seats, and probably out of a different year car. That diagonal stitching in the seats is 1987 ONLY.
Must be in the water. I just purchased a 1988 Iroc-z in Ohio my self. I need it like i need a hole in my head but was to nice to pass up.
80,000 miles.
