replaced starter won't crank

The old starter cranked but the pinion would not come out far enough to engage the flywheel. I replaced the starter and when I turn the key to start no crank but the brake warning light comes on. I checked my connections to the starter. The large one has power all the time. The small one with the purple wire has no power when the key is turned to start. The starter will turn if I jump the 2 . I looked at the wiring diagrams and it looks like there is a key vats code disable and a trans switch that only starts in park and this car has aftermarket alarm the cuts the starter circuit. I am thinking of running a new wire from the ignition switch to the starter.

Re: replaced starter won't crank

If it's the vats then the car still won't start with the rigged in wire. It'll crank but the ecm will not get a signal to light injectors. And if it were me, I'd want the neutral safety switch still working.
Troubleshoot the problem and find out which is the issue. It could be the ignition switch (not the key cylinder, the switch above the column) and you'd have still nothing going to the starter with a new wire.
I'd remove the alarm and troubleshoot it like a normal problem. If it's the vats, then you can often bypass that in the ecm. Tuned Performance on here can help you with that.

Re: replaced starter won't crank

Thanks for talking me down from doing a hack job. It was the aftermarket alarm starter disable relay.
