starter motor doesn't fit right!

I'm having problems installing a starter on my 83 Z28. It is loose fitting, even when the bolts are tight and the shims are installed. The car came without a starter, so I don't even know if this is the right one. I checked other year cars if they had different starters, but they are all the same. The car also has a 5-speed. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are you perhaps using the starter bolts from an automatic equipped car? The 5 speed starters have bolts that are approximately 1/4" shorter.

Thanks for the help, Jim. I think that was the problem. I ended up using an intake manifold bolt, and an automatic starter bolt wit some washers on it. The guy at Autozone gave me the wrong bolts. The starter is in, but I still have more work to do before starting the car. I just hope it runs!
