Can't say about Buick or how these cars are alike or different. Not applicable on this forum.
On a CHEVY V8 in the years in question (82-92), the timing tab is almost directly above the crank damper, dead center. Kinda toward the center from the power steering pump. VERY eeeeeeeezzzzzy to see, looking behind the water pump.
Your 84 most likely doesn't have a 200C. It'd be a damn shame if somebody put that steeeeeming bucket of monkey excrement alloyed with elephant plop in it. Not saying "they didn't"; only, it didn't come that way, and it would be a SIGNIFICANT DOWNGRADE IN EVERY WAY, and would have cost money besides. As we all know, the more money something costs, the less likely some PO did it. More likely, your 84 has what every other 84 with auto trans came with; a 700-R4. Count your blessings.

Car has a 700-4r tranny. Thanks goodness. The distributor on Buick v8 engines is at the front of the block. easy to work with.

It's easy enough on Chevy motors as well, at the rear. Not sure how that's a thing?
Did you locate the timing tab?

I did. It is somewhat hidden but I found it. I had to mark the harmonic balancer with white paint to see it & spray a little wd40 on a long artists brush and then move the brush head over the timing bracket to read the marks. Tomorrow, I will attempt to set the timing.
