305 Rebuild - Help Needed
My roommate and I are either wanting to rebuild our current 305 or replace with a 350 Vortec, but aren't sure which to go for.
In his 91' Firebird he has a very tired 305. We are looking for a budget option, so what we were thinking on doing is:
- Fresh rebuild .030 over 305
- Vortec 5.7 heads, milled
- LT1 cam with 1.5 roller rockers
- Ported TBI unit
- Headers and y-pipe from Hedman
- ECM tuning
With all of these changes we are hoping to get around 300 HP, give or take (I believe it would be a bit less than 300). But we have been told that doing all of what I listed above and making a 'fun 305 around 300 HP' would throw a rod. Is this true? If so, do you have any suggestions on what can be done to avoid that?
We were also considering a 350 Vortec and just drop it in, but even then we'd still want headers and such which would put that at well over $4,000.
Any help, suggestions or opinions would be appreciated. We are trying to essentially find the cheapest route to getting around 300 HP and avoiding killing the car; and yes we want to keep TBI.

Ditch the 350 Vortec head idea and get a set of 059 or 520 casting 305 Vortec heads. The chamber is smaller and they flow extremely well too. You will be over 300 hp with that setup. I made 300 hp with 059s and the stock cam.
