Need Help with Speedometer Gear Housing
Hi All,
Let me first say it's been many years since I have been on the board but it feels good to post again. The members helped me years ago with many of my projects and I am hoping I can help a friend.
The car is an all stock 1988 5.7 non G92 IROC. The plastic housing that fits in the transmission for the speedo cable is leaking so we'd like to replace it. The current unit uses a 2-piece gear, which is a plastic gear on a metal shaft. I've seen replacement housings on ebay, but they seem to have plastic gears with them as well for a multitude of rear gear combinations. Can anyone recommend the correct part to replace it with or will one of the housings that include the plastic gears work?
Any ideas on why they used a metal shaft on some of these?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: Need Help with Speedometer Gear Housing
You are correct and there are two types available:
Original style plastic with two piece gears (not very popular anymore and harder to find)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/32459652721...3ABFBM2OKzzvJg
Newer style and easier to find. Uses one piece plastic gear. Buy the multi gear kit so you can experiment with gears for accurate speedo.

Speedo gears are NOT compatible between the two styles.

Hi Aaron,
Thank you for your response on this I appreciate it. Were able to finally order the aluminum housing/plastic gear combo and get it installed. Everything works exactly as designed now. Thank you again for your help on this!
