i have a 1985 camaro with an 83 firebird engine 5.0 carb and i can get it started with the key in the forward position and a switch i made to connect to the starter but when i release the key or turn the starter switch i made off, the car turns off. ive already replaced the ignition switch, im new to cars in general but im an electrical tech so hit me with anything you think is the problem

 

Begin by measuring voltages in the primary ignition and accessory power systems with the ignition switch in its various positions. As you probably discovered, the switch is mounted low on the steering column jacket, and is actuated by a linkage rod. That linkage can become worn or incorrectly adjusted.
