83 T/A started running rough, Vacuum gauge showed good compression but needle bouncing violently. Compression test showed #1 cylinder dead, pulled the cover and found the exhaust rocker arm stud broken. Threads are gone, but there’s about 1/2 of stud left to grab onto. Obviously it’s the stock pressed in type. Any ideas on removal without pulling the head and taking it to a machinist?
Not all that uncommon unfortunately. Fortunately though, they're not all that hard to get out.
Try threading the remains with a die (3/8"-24) and using a nut to press it out. Then thread the hole and use a "repair" threaded stud. Those aren't the greatest thing in the world but for what looks like yerbasic bone-stock situation it should be adequate.
Nice. So I tapped it, got it halfway out and had to stop for work. I think she's gonna go.
So the repair threaded stud replacement, do I need a 3/8 or oversize it?

You can prob find studs on ebay or amazon as well buit I got mine from Speedway Motors. Make sure the pushrod is not bent n still straight.
Local O'Reillys got a stud kit to the store next day. One thing I've really enjoyed about working on this car is almost everything is on the shelf locally or can be here first thing the next morning.
Good call on the pushrod. Looks like everything survived undamaged.
