Something really strange

Tongiht while driving my car i noticed it doing something strange. When my car starts to approach 4500 rpms my volt guage drops and all my lights start to dim. Does any one have any ideas what this might be. It has also done the same thing even while deccelerating, but no where near as frequently. It does even if i just sit there and rev the motor up to 4500 rpm in neutral. It is an 87 iroc 305 tpi. 5 speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can the ignition module cause all of the lights to go dim. I thought that it may be the alternator but it doesn't do it all the time. Can the alternator cause an intermittent condition like the one i described. I will try changing the ignition module as soon as i get a chance a let you know what happens. And btw, the ignition module is an aftermarket module from Summit made by Accel, I was wondering if anyone has had an complaints about this particular Ign. module. Thanks

Sounds like your alternator belt is slipping. Probably because the weather got colder

Despite the hype, ignition modules are all pretty much the same. Go to Pep Boys.

I have not had problems with my accel module but I would definately NOT go to pep boys for one. stick to delco/echelin or msd or accel

HOWEVER after re reading your post I wouldent worry about the module because your right -- the lights wouldent dim.

check the usual suspects -- alternator, battery and most of all the dreaded--

GROUND WIRES! if you have even one loose or shady connection you will have problems.

good luck

I haven't really been able to find something that I believe to be responsible for the problem i have been having. I was hoping someone may have had a similar problem, and could tell me what it was. I appreciate any help. Thanks

I tightened the alternator belt but it still does the same thing. One other thing when it is warm out the volts do not drop as much as when it's pretty cold outside. I live in Jersey so the weather here has been pretty strange this winter. Past couple of weeks the temperature has been about mid 40's and then this tuesday the 29th and the 28th the temperature has been upper 60's . Anyway help would be appreciated. Thanks.

usually when its colder, electrical equipment performs better. so this leads me to think that you might have a bad ground or wiring somewhere. it still could be the alternator itself but like I said this performs better when its cold.
