Advice - delete the smog pump?

I'm new to this forum still and my son has a 1988 base firebird V6 2.8L.
For now the V6 is good, as its not too much power for him, especially since its a manual 5 speed. I was wondering about the necessity or HP drain of the Smog pump. We don't have emissions testing and I have read on other threads that the newer cats don't need this smog pump feed. I know the basic role of the Smog pump but looking for a little insight into this.

Re: Advice - delete the smog pump?

No significant HP drain, I would only delete it if it was seized or broken.

Re: Advice - delete the smog pump?

Komet has it covered. If the pump spins freely with the belt removed, the power drain is far less than an alternator, and possibly less than a water pump. Removing it will gain nothing but a little space and potentially require an additional belt and idler.

They really don't consume much of any HP...

Plus you can make it into a Vacuum Pump in the future if you swap a V8 into the Car.
