hi im new i have a 1992 firebird with a 3.1 auto and i was wondering if i can take the smog pump off the engine. also i live in Montana and we have no smog control. and i would like to take it off for more HP.

you can take it off but it's not really going to effect your hp at all, especially with a v6.

Ok, now on the smog pump, there is a connector, if I take it off, will the check engine light come on, or is not important? thanks

the light won't come on. if you're going to take it off you might want to get a smog delete pulley, or just a shorter belt i don't really know how the accessories are configured on the v6.

The best way to do this after you remove the smog pump is to take a string/thin rope, and rap it around the pulleys that you need to use, eliminating the smog pump pulley as it should not even be in the car anymore. Mark how long the string is to replicate the length of the new belt, then you'll need to run to napa (i say napa cause i love napa and the people actually know something) and tell them the size of the belt ya need, throw it on and tighten it up.

I used the non-A/C belt, my car has A/C an live in FL so I wanted to keep it.
Just had to re-route the belt in the opposite direction around the crank pulley.

removing it wont give you more than 1hp at the most. so if youre going to take it off simply for that reason, dont bother. if you do take it off, do the rope method suggested above, but it is a hit/miss method. itlll take you a couple tries to get the right belt more than likely.

Don't just get rid of parts for the sake of it. Mine would have stayed on if the turbo/plumbing didn't have to go there.

it's nice to do it to be able to clean up the look of things and to have more room but there's plenty of room to work on the v6's

all your AIR pump does is pump air to the cat to help it burn emissions, which is a good thing. and if it doesnt rob any HP or TQ, then why take it off? the only reason mine came off is because i put on headers. otherwise, theres no reason at all to take it off. just my .02
