My fuel pump died, luckily it let me get it back home. Anyways we searched on youtube for how to replace the fuel pump, and did you know if you do it by the book, its like 4.5 hours profession mechanic labor and you have to remove your exhuast, and I think the rear axle, to be able to drop the fuel tank to access it. Then we found some vids on youtube on how to replace it the "easy" way and that was to cut a whole in the trunk area, which in our opinion was the way to go. And it makes for a much easier fuel pump replacement if we ever need to do it again. I'll try to share the youtube vid links and maybe some pics.
I would never cut a hole in the trunk. Just my opinion.
I understand that. But I am ok with it. I definitely don't foresee myself ever selling my car or anything. Especially those cars where you want to keep it as original as possible. But this car isn't that. It's just my fun toy that I ended up keeping just cuz I didn't find anything better to replace it with disappointingly. Sure faster maybe, not better imo. I got the car in 2001-ish w 145k miles for $2500. Transmission rebuilt at 175k miles(10+yrs ago), car now has probably 250k miles. Just hanging in there. I myself wouldnt have done it, but my dad, I have seen him replace parts in the back of the engine(something for the heater) and cut a whole through the firewall to get to it[different car 90 Ford Taurus]. I was shocked as well. But when it came to this one, I have a custom exhuast and I really didn't want to try to disassemble it. So my Dad and I were on the same page for this one. Another note when buying a replacement fuel pump.. was reading reviews where they had 1-2 bad fuel pumps until they got the 3rd one which worked fine... Aint no way we was gonna do all that over again. Again... maybe if the car was something special w low miles or whatever, but nayy it's just something I enjoy driving.
I'm a purist, and would never do that. Butchery, IMO......but to each, his own. Your car.
You should at least clean up and pretty up the hack job by installing one of these:
Well, it's your car. Honestly, It's not hard to lower the tank and takes about the same time. Plus it gives you a chance to look things over in the backend.
The bigger problem with what you've done there involves those pieces of hose and those sketchy worm clamps. I would hope that you at least put flares on the ends of all the metal lines. There's fuel under pressure there; a leak might not be readily discovered in such a hidden place and could be catastrophic.
As far as hacking a hole in the car's floor...well, it's your car.

I believe you're talking about putting a "bead" near the end of the tubing, not a "flare." With a bead, the hose would slide smoothly over the bead, and then the hose clamp would install on the back side of the bead.
If you own a car, be a mechanic!!!
It's not that hard to do it the correct way and you can even upgrade items along the way. STOP ruining cars that are hard to find in the first place!!!!!
Hole is cut on my car. No one will know the difference. Makes it much easier for repair/upgrades in the future. Quick diagnosis as well. Fuel pump is now a fifteen minute ordeal with basic hand tools. Just make a nice hatch/cover!

A hole is no help in diagnostic or upgrades. The correct job also is done with basic hand tools. If you do a job and say to yourself "no one will know" you have done the job wrong!!!!!!!
This topic has been beaten to death here and probably all over the internet. I'd say over the last 2 decades, if not longer. Do some simple TGO thread searches, Google and YouTube and you'll find tons of info, Pros and Cons, bla bla bla.
No need for yet another thread where all you are going to get is another annoying emotional debate instead of the "How to do it".
Did the OP thinks this was a new, special idea?...
This was being debated when I joined this site.... In 2001...
Btw, I had to replace my fuel pump in 2012... Did it the right way... Dropped the tank, cleaned the tank... Have not touched it since... That's a shortcut you might never need again...thank God all three of my tpi cars have not had holes cut in them... The idea of cutting fuel lines.... Gives me the Herbie jeebies...
